How much fabric do you need for Jellycat-style ears?
Short answer: one 8.5×11 in sheet covers one plush — a pair of ears plus oval paw pads. The 8.5×14 in sheet does two. Here’s how to be sure before you cut.
Measure before you buy
Plush sizes vary a lot between styles, so measure the actual animal in front of you rather than trusting a number from the internet. Lay one ear flat and measure it at its widest and longest points, then add about ¼ inch all the way around for a seam allowance. Double it — every ear needs a front and a back.
Do the same for paw pads. They’re small, and they are the piece most people forget to budget fabric for.
Which size sheet to order
- 8.5 × 11 in — $19.50. One plush. A pair of ears plus oval paw pads. This is what most orders are.
- 8.5 × 14 in — $22.50. Two plush. The extra length lets the pieces nest, so you get a second full set out of it for $3 more — $11.25 a plush instead of $19.50. Order this one if you’re making a matching pair, doing two gifts at once, or want a spare set in case of a mis-cut.
Which material to ask for
The default is a poly-satin stretch blend. It holds printed detail sharply — important when a school logo has fine lines — and it has a little give, which helps it sit smoothly around a curved ear. It does have a soft sheen. That’s the trade: the glossier finish is what keeps the colors crisp.
If you want a matte, fuzzy finish instead, ask for fleece in the notes box when you order. Same price. Fleece is more forgiving on raw edges and reads softer next to a plush body, but fine logo detail is a little less sharp.
Cutting it
- Trace your ear shape onto the back of the fabric, not the front.
- Lay pieces out with the print running the same direction on each ear — mirrored logos are the most common mistake and the hardest to un-see.
- Cut with sharp fabric scissors or a rotary cutter. Poly-satin frays if you saw at it.
- Sew right sides together, leave a gap, turn it out, then close the gap by hand. The raw edge ends up inside, so no hemming.
Common questions
Do I need the exact school color codes?
No. General colors are fine — navy, maroon, forest. We match from the school’s own palette and send you a proof before anything is printed.
What if I mess up the first cut?
It happens, and it’s the main argument for the 8.5×14. Because that sheet holds two full sets, a spoiled cut costs you the spare rather than the whole order. A reprint is a new order, so $3 up front is cheap insurance.
Can I use this for something other than ears?
